The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake: Part 1: Food

Submitted Post:  mrsvaccarezza

I have to admit that I was a little unsure how I was going to do reading this book, mainly because of it lack of quotations.  I find myself rereading a lot of lines to double check who said them or what the quotation actually was.

Otherwise, I have finished the first part of the story and I guess I am liking it.  The path that the book is headed is still unclear to me (and I am not one to really read the synopsis, so that could be part of the problem).  I like the characters, the way the past is intermixed in the present, and am really interested to see where it is all headed.  I am particularly curious about Joseph, and with the next part titled after him, I am anxious to see what it revealed.

I hope that everyone is enjoying it, I look forward to hearing other reactions and to reading more!

Title: The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake

Author: Aimee Bender

This book is based around the interesting idea of feeling empathy for the maker of food. The young antagonist is Rose. From the age of 8 onwards Rose is able to taste how people feel buy eating the food they make.

The book explores the idea well but focuses on the distress that this causes Rose more than anything else. I would’ve liked to have seen both sides of the ability explored. Instead the negative aspects of such a skill is the driving force of the story line. It gives the book a gloomy overtone.

This was an interesting read with an easy style. I finshed the book quickly as I enjoyed the authors wiritng but it felt unfinished or rushed towards the end.

Worth a read.

February Selection!

Don’t hate me.

I realize it’s February 2nd. I realize everyone has been suggesting books. I realize I have posted nothing.

HOWEVER, I was out of town, falling in love with Portland, OR and dying of a sinus infection. Go easy on me. BUT! I have decided. I got this book suggested once, and the title intrigued me, so I looked it up - and with my recent infatuation with all things cooking, I thought this sounded incredible!

Has anyone else heard of it? Does anyone HAVE it? Who is excited to join me in reading February’s selection?
